In this series, I explored the emotional power of color and its ability to transcend traditional representation. Over the past two years, color has been central to my mental well-being and creative work, and this residency focused on isolating and expressing its essence.

At my recent residency in Atotonilco, Mexico the mesquite trees surrounding the studio immediately captivated me, their branches framing the space and inspiring daily studies. These evolved into "color fields" installations among the trees, animated by wind and sunlight into ephemeral compositions. This interplay of color, movement, and nature provided a meditative counterpoint to the political tensions of the U.S. election.

In San Miguel de Allende, vivid ribbons and floral decorations on doorways caught my eye, blending color with architecture and community. Inspired by this harmony, I echoed these dynamics in my studio work, uniting the spontaneity of color with the elegance of natural forms to create a visual language bridging fleeting beauty and lasting structure.

In February 2023 I was an artist-in-residence at Gracia in Antigua Guatemala. I walked the city and surrounding area to photograph one color per day. The prints were collaged together to eventually form a rainbow in honor of the Mayan goddess Ixchel - Lady of the Rainbow.

During the Spring and Summer of the covid-19 pandemic, I started walking through my neighborhood with my iPhone camera open and my finger on the shutter. I set out each day with a goal to find a specific color, even in the smallest details.
What happened was eye-opening. Even though I walked the same streets every day, each color made my meanderings feel brand new. I marveled at nature, putting on a sympathetic show to ease our pain. And I appreciated the creativity and humor displayed by my fellow San Franciscans in their show of kindness and resilience.

We are privileged in California to be so close to the beautiful beaches, exuberant culture, and cuisine of Mexico. Baja California is like a tendril, reaching into the ocean and pulling us into a more colorful world.
